I’ve been volunteering in an ESL classroom. Yesterday, we worked with vocabulary around setting goals and finding action steps that would lead to accomplishing them.
Example goal: to speak, read and write English well.
- get to English class on time
- speak English with my friends
- help my children with their homework
I have mixed feelings about teaching American-style striving to immigrants. There are dark edges to our penchant for ambition and accomplishment. Bottom line though? Yesterday’s class was fun! The room was buzzing with hope and energy.
While I am conscious, this month, of the choice to accept those things I cannot change, I want to find balance in my life between healthy striving and gentle surrender.
