As I go through my day, I watch for moments when the corners of my mouth turn up and my heart lifts. I note these moments of delight in my journal and consider their patterns here. I encourage you to be on the lookout for your Delight of the Day.
The Delight of the Day practice is a reminder to choose joy.
Reach for Simple Delights
On days like today, when the sky is blue and the birds are singing, delight is simple – get outside and breathe the fresh air. When I’m having a “bad day,” delight is as simple as choosing to find something beautiful. Yesterday, I looked at the clouds and use my imagination to identify shapes. (There were many dogs in the sky yesterday.)
Simple delights are only a choice away.
Be Surprised by Complex Delights
Some delights are a little more complicated. Last month’s Creativity Cookie idea of “open to scarecitement” was inspired by being asked to join Jamie Ridler for a podcast. Jamie is one of my creativity heroes. Her podcast nourishes me, her blog inspires me and her laugh is a lovely dose of comfort and joy. I wanted to be delighted by the invitation – and I was also scared. I wanted to be delighted by the actual interview – and I was also hijacked by adrenaline. The monsters bellowed hugely while I waited for the podcast to be released, but here it is and I am delighted. The bigger the risk, the louder the monsters, the more surprising and fulfilling the delight.
Complex delights come with patience, persistence and trust.
May you find delight in each day.
