Welcome to Creativity Cookies, your monthly invitation to creative action!
The BIG IDEA this month, is:
I first used the word “scarecitement” when I was asked to do a live radio interview. As an introvert I prepare-prepare-prepare. Only when I have practiced and visualized do I feel ready to go public. I couldn’t do that for live radio, but I realized that, though I felt FRIGHTENED about what was going to happen, I also WANTED it.
As creative people, we show ourselves to the world. That is a vulnerable position, but it makes art possible.
Show your creative work to new people. (This may mean show it to some ONE.) If you have already shown your creative work to some people, find someone – or a group – who hasn’t seen it. Notice the combination of trembly stomach and fluttery heartbeat that is scarecitement. You don’t have to like it, but do OPEN TO IT, and know that it is part of releasing your work to the world.
No one talks more eloquently about vulnerability than Brené Brown. If you don’t know about her, I highly recommend, her TED talks and books. In this video short, animated and directed by Katy Davis (AKA Gobblynne), Brené Brown talks about the difference between sympathy and empathy.
