For several years, I’ve been practicing whatI call The Delight of the Day. Each day I watch for moments that inspire a strong feeling of gratitude and joy within me. I mentally label the strongest such moment The Delight of the Day. The practice encourages what psychologists call “positive scanning.” I’m waiting for good things to happen and, when they do, I notice and celebrate them.
Here are my Delights for this week:
Ever have one of those days where something good happens followed by another something good followed by another something good? They are rare and, if you are like me, the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Days seem to happen way more often than the Wonderful, Magical, Terrific, Very Good Days. Every so often, though, those great days come around and I had one this week. I am borrowing a phrase from my friends at Your HeART Makes a Difference – I’m calling it a Joy Jam.
Mine involved getting a day job newsletter out, gazing at the Terra-cotta Warriors at the Minneapolis Institute of Arts, visiting with a friend about God, creativity and everything, and teasing with some helpers while my apartment got cleaned. My eyes were full of beauty and my heart was full of love. Delight tumbled upon delight.
Joy Jam days can’t be engineered, they can only be invited. Watch for them and celebrate when they happen!
I saw the movie of Les Miserables with my teenage daughter and her friend. Lots of tissues were involved. Sharing a beautiful story with people you love his precious.
My first phone meeting with my new Circe Circle friends. This small group of women will support and encourage each other as we accomplish creative projects.
A church leadership committee meeting was moving and inspiring. Having all those words in the same sentence is unusual and encouraging!
I started to volunteer for the Smooch! Project. I’m pleased to be part of a team that is encouraging smoochy demonstrations of love and affection.
Quiet delight: spending a day at the computer getting things done.
May you find delight in each day.
